The 42-inch TC-P42ST30 is the smallest of the ST line, a replacement for the G25 from 2010. This entry level 3D unit is full-HD 1080p in glorious 3D. The black levels on the TC-P42ST30 are rich, inky and have deep retention in different scenes on-screen, whether a dark subway or bright seashore. TC-P42ST30 Picture quality is enhanced by short- throw phosphor technology, which provides a quick decay time to the phosphors when illuminated. This was introduced to all HD models last year, and Panasonic has improved on the short stroke technology by thirty percent for 2011.

The TC-P42ST30 is full HD 1080p 3D. That means your eye is getting full 1080p resolution on every frame, unlike some brands that need to sacrifice resolution when displaying full 3D. One pair of 3-D glasses is included with the P42ST30. Additional pairs will have to be purchased separately.

Sound

The P42ST30 comes with two-channel stereo output sound. A nice touch is that the sound bar has been tucked under the cabinet along the bottom. The speakers come out a bit in back but since it is hidden you are not aware. This configuration also allows you to use the room itself as part of the speaker system, reflecting sound along the back wall and floor.

The sound bar is a great option if you have neither the space nor self-motivation to set up six different speakers. It is a compact profile providing good spatial separation during dialogue scenes and sports broadcasts.

One quick tip- if you run into a situation where background sounds are much louder than the main sound during sporting events or television dramas, you can rectify this situation by going into the settings and disabling surround sound.

Energy

TC-P42ST30 Customer’s Review

TV was put through the test with Inception on Blu-Ray. My initial impressions still stand, and even more so. The skin tones are extremely accurate after applying D-Nice’s settings, and the 24p playback was smooth as silk. On the downside though, I was still able to see a little fluctuating brightness, but again I have to really look for it to see it. Nice to know I can just call Panasonic and have them send me the update, so no worries. I will update again after 1000 hours.

I have kept my eye on this TV ever since it came out earlier in the year. Due to woes about Fluctuating Brightness and cost issues, it took me until a couple weeks ago to buy it. Wow, it was worth the wait.

Prep:
Following D-Nice’s panel prep method (Google “2011 panasonic issues/settings thread” to get to the thread on HDJ), I used color slides for the first 100 hours to properly age the panel. I left it on straight through and kept a table top fan pointed at it to help make sure it didn’t get hot. The colors alone were something to look at really. Until around the 200-300 hour mark, I will continue to run the slides in between watching full screen content (games, some TV shows, and zoomed in movies), as this will help continue to age it well. I’ve actually read that you should be careful of watching a lot of anamorphic widescreen content (i.e. movies) for the first 1000 hours, where the majority should be from full-screen content. After the 1000 hour mark though, any content will be completely safe and fine.

Performance:
After the set up I applied D-Nice’s post prep settings, and tested it on the only thing I had available, Halo Reach via HDMI. I figured all the neon and contrasting colors would give it a hiccup on processing. I was wrong. Everything was beautiful. Including the loading screens, the fleeting multi-player combat, and especially the cut-scenes, they just had this “pop” that I have never seen before. By turning off motion smoother (and other various picture “enhancers”) you can get to near-game mode responsiveness without sacrificing the picture quality by actually selecting the built in “game mode” feature. I really can’t wait to try out a Blu-Ray player and actually stream things directly to the set. I’ll update the review once I get those tests done. On another note, my set does have a little Fluctuating Brightness, but I have to actively look for it to see it. I still may get Panasonic to send out the EPROM update to me, just so I don’t have to worry about the “problem”.

Miscellaneous:
It’s hard to see how Panasonic could fit all these features in such a competitively priced set, especially given how it is the EXACT SAME PANEL AS THE GT30, sans THX mode. It comes with a Wi-Fi adapter, and relatively easily connects to the internet. It’s a little difficult remembering where all the options are to get the MAC address for example.

Conclusion:
If you’ve been on the fence about buying a new TV like I have been for the past 3 years, do yourself a favor and get this TV. It’s almost completely future-proof, by having 3D and internet apps (not to mention updating firmware), it has amazing picture quality in a dim/dark room, has a 100,000 hour half life, and the current value is tremendous. As far as what they could add to next year’s model, there’s no way they could add anything more to justify waiting (and to pay more!), this TV really does have it all.
